A Family's History
The first part of this trilogy, The Early Years, chronicles the history of my European ancestors, the Glattfelders of Switzerland and follows their ardurous journey to escape from the Protestant Reformation to the New World in 1743. This section portrays their sea voyage across the Atlantic to the new colony of Pennsylvania.
Church, ship and land records reveal the Glattfelder's arrived on the sailing ship the Francis and Elizabeth at the port of Philadelphia in August 1743. Other evidence and artifacts found in Europe traces the family roots back to the 1300s. The earliest known records show the family emerged from a small farming village called Glattfelden located north of modern-day Zürich, Switzerland.
The second part of the trilogy, The Middle Years, follows the family's struggles through the chaotic American colonial period after 1743. Land records, historical letters and newspaper articles provide detailed information about their land purchases and how they developed their farms near York, Pennsylvania.
Marriage, death and tax records give glimpses of how the family evolved and newspaper artilces reveal they developed a number of important engineering innovations during the Industrial Revolution.
Military records and letters from soldiers serving in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars painfully reveals what life was like during the infamous battle of Gettysburg which took place near the family farms.
Additional military records reveal the family's involvment in World War I and World War II while more modern records bring the clan's story into the 21th-century.
The third part of the trilogy, The Current Years, is autobiographical with stories from my mother, father and other family members. The trilogy format was chosen after I started writing my autobiography. Once I started that text I realized a more complete history of the entire family was needed. It is my hope that the completed trilogy will carry great literary and historical significance.
The Middle Years contain chapters about my father, Jack Glodfelter's, military service and come directly from handwritten drafts written in 1984 by my mother, Helen Tarapchak Glodfelter. While this manuscript remains a work-in-progress, I write it joyfully often with tears rolling down my face, recalling my parents and the extraordinary lives they lived.
To achieve more historical accuracy in the story-telling, I explored a number of controversial and psychological techniques including past life regression therapy to help fill in the blanks. While the concepts of past lives and reincarnation are not widely accepted by the scientific community of the 21st century, a statistically high number of unexplained coincidences and psychic phenomenas I experienced throughout my lifetime led me to the only logical conclusion possible - “the soul never dies...it simply changes state.”
This spiritual concept may not be obvious or even acceptable to many readers of my century. However, I firmly believe that in the future science will evolve and breakthroughs will be made finally proving many of the ancient esoteric truths once and for all such as, “As above, so below.”
It is not my intent to prove so-called psychic abilities exist or that reincarnation and life after death are viable patterns within nature. I only wish to inform my readers about the research and techniques I used to help write parts of this story.
Throughout my life, I have been fascinated by astrology, alchemy, ancient religions and mysticism. I felt compelled to pursue a serious, life-long study of these arts starting at the age of 15. Those studies continue. Hopefully, my current audience and future ones will gain an interest in psychic phenomena, life after death and reincarnation, and explore these interesting realms. While I admit that some of what I've learned (or remembered) through these techniques has been painful, I've grown and become a much better story-teller for it.
Not everyone needs to dedicate a lifetime to the study of spiritual concepts but that is the path I chose. Many people live their lives without ever suffering a single, painful, soul-searching experience. This mysterious and mystical territory is not for everyone.
However, I wanted and needed a deeper form of self-inquiry during this lifetime. I do not recommend that everyone embark on this obscure and sometimes frightening journey alone. I recommend first an honest study of the hidden arts for at least 10 years with others who share the same interest. Then, after great study, seek out professionals trained in the new techniques of past life regression therapy which I promise will unlock the secrets of your Universe.
Happy travels...and I'll see you on the other side.

I wrote my first book,"Palimpsest," in 1984 to complete my Honors Thesis at the University of California, San Diego. I earned a bachelor's degree in Literature and Writing and was awarded Magna Cum Laude for my efforts.
Palimpsest, is a 75-page novella about reincarnation. It collected dust in storage boxes until I resurrected it in 2007. I plan to adapt it into a screenplay.
The story is based on my experiences with past life regression therapy and the pioneer work of Brian Jamieson of San Diego.
The title, Palimpsest, originates from the Greek word palimp-sest, "meaning an imprint or erasure or mark that suggests previous ink or etchings. It's the imprints from which ancient documents, writings, paintings, etchings, cave walls, petroglyhs and fossils are decifered from." (per Wikipedia)
During Feb - May 2010
I began self-publishing and legally protecting my past Creative Writing Projects which up till now gathered dust and mold in boxes stored in three different cities.
In 2007, I tracked down and gathered my old writings box by box, city by city because of my wonderful and loving husband, Tom. Most of my writings were recovered but sadly some was lost.
Luckily, the original copy of first novel, "Palimpsest," was among those found.
Also recovered in 2007 were both versions of my second book, "Mars Bonfire."
My heart jumped for joy when I found the original hard copy of the novel and the adapted screenplay. The novel, "Mars Bonfire: An American Sadhu," was written in 1994 and is about my late second husband, Craig Evers. I adapted it into a screenplay and submitted it to Project Greenlight in 2002. The writing contest was hosted by actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
Project Greenlight judges gave the story excellent reviews but noted two major drawbacks to the story.
1) it had too many foreign locations and would cost $60 to $100 million dollars to produce - they had a $1 million dollar budget.
2) they didn't like the "to be continued" ending.
I ended it that way because I ran out of time and still had a lot of the novel left to incorporate into the story. Plus I didn't know what I was doing at the time. I was taking a stab at screenwriting and thought maybe there would be a sequel or TV series.
Also, I entered the 2002 Project Greenlight contest only because a media colleague, Rachel Lockhart, gave me copy of her expensive screenwriting software. Rachel wanted to enter the contest but didn't have a good story. I did. She encouraged me to adapt my novel into a script as an exercise.
I did it partly to prove to her (and myself) that I could do it. I did not expect to win and was proud for finishing the script on time. I was more thrilled by the judges feedback.
Sadly, I did not continue my screenwriting exercises for five years.
After my recovery, I began writing again, this time starting something new with, "Travels with Ray," short stories based on road trips with my Pug dog, Ray.
I also started writing an autobiography which turned into a historical novel based on my family tree entitled, "White Roots."
"White Roots" was inspired by the years of geneology research complied by my late mother, Helen Tarapchak Glodfelter. I found some chapters of her manuscript in a dusty box three years after her death in August 2006.
Sadly, her larger 200-page handwritten manuscript was lost to the trash. The chapters I found were about my father's military career in World War II and Korea.
"White Roots" chronicles my ancestor's journey to the New World and follows them through time to the 21st century. I utilized the historical documents, military archives, land and tax records, as well as, birth, death and marriage records to tell the story.
"White Roots" is a new kind of history book because it follows one family starting at the difficult colonial years through the turbulent Revolutionary and Civil Wars into the Industrial Revolution and Wesward expansion, culminating with my personal reflections about life in the 21st century.
"White Roots" offers a more personal look at our nation's history through the evolution of one family and how they reflect the great American Dream.
Their story begins just prior to 1743 with the struggles of colonial Americans, then chronicles the birth a nation.
"White Roots" portrays American history by showing the strength of character, the determination and the absolute faith of one family who reflects how the New World became the greatest nation on Earth.
This story shows the tenacity, hard work, strong values and patriotism that created the American Dream. This story answers the question why anyone who lives here feels proud to be an American.
"White Roots" begins with their struggles against political, economic and religious repression sweeping Europe during the Protestant Reformation.
It then follows their life in the new colony of Pennsylvania through the Revolutionary and Civil wars, then through the Industrial Revolution, World Wars 1 and 2, Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War into the Space Age culminating in 2012.

This screenplay reached the Semi-Finalist round of the 2011 American Screenwriting Competition and the 2010 Final Draft, Big Break Screenwriting Contest.
SYNOPSIS:
Mars Bonfire is based on the true life story of my second husband, a police officer who after falling from grace forms an international hippy drug cartel called The Cloud Family.
Mars Bonfire portrays the counterculture generation who, "tuned in, turned on and dropped out," of mainstream society by smoking marijuana, hash and hash oil and expanding their consciousness through the use of psychotropic drugs.
This story follows a generation that openly embraced free love and alternative lifestyles while flocking to rock music festivals and Vietnam war protest marches across the nation.
The story begins with Mars resigning from the police force for smoking pot. He then uses his law enforcement skills to help organize war protests in California. He eventually gets arrested and his family sends him far away until things cool off.
He travels to the Himalayas, where his journey really begins where he aligns with the Brotherhood of Love out of Afghanistan and becomes the first American to commercially produce hash oil in large quantities and distribute it internationally.
Meanwhile, the chief of a local Nepalese tribe adopts him shortly after he moves to their village and quickly earns the title of Village Doctor and Village Chief.
Later, in Toronto, Canada he takes the fall when authorities close down the infamous Rochdale College known as the Wall Street of hippy drug dealing.
The fall comes when Rochdale College is closed down and Mars arrested. He serves time in a U.S. federal penitentary but never rats out his partners or sources. After his release from prison, he works as a psychic counselor and a taxi driver.
He moves back to Southeast Asia and studies with yogis, monks and sadhus until failing health forced his return to the United States.
Mars Bonfire is an action-packed, exotic, adventure story with strong male roles, political statements, mystical themes and spectacular site locations.
It's a story about how one man's journey reflects a nation's 30-year struggle to legalize marijuana, hash and hash oil.
Mars Bonfire makes strong political statements about the War in Vietnam, racism, free love, drug use and drug sales.
In the 1970s, society considered Mars and the entire Cloud Family to be criminals. Since then marijuana, hash and hash oil have been decriminalized in 14 U.S. states and numerous countries around the world.
Today, Mars and the Cloud Family would be considered successful entrepreneurs.
